Be Prepared for Springtime Rain | Thaw | Flood

Spring Sewer Flooding Pt 1 Ham Lake MNYou know the old saying; April showers bring May flowers? Well, they could also bring unwanted Septic System Problems. When a long Ham Lake MN winter finally comes to an end and the ground begins to thaw, the added moisture can overload a Septic Drainage Field Area. Heavy rains or melting snow may cause the already saturated ground to practically fill up with liquid waste and wreak havoc on the Biological Sewage Treatment Process. As a Licensed MN Septic Contractor, CSI Custom Septic, Inc. would like to offer up some free advice on ways to Avoid Septic System Flooding Hazard. This is Part 1 of a 2 Part series.

How Ground Saturation Effects Backyard Sewer

A typical Septic System functions as a Private On Site Sewer Facility operating in back yards in Ham Lake MN and countless other Minnesota communities. It relies heavily on the Natural Biological Sewage Treatment Process to be effective. In order to work correctly, household wastewater must be absorbed into the Soil Treatment Area. Too much moisture can result in Septic System Failure.

How A Septic System Works Naturally

The Basic 10 Step Septic System Sewage Treatment Concept is this:

  1. Wastewater and raw sewage are collected from every household drain and toilet.
  2. The sewage and waste water flow out through a sewer pipe to an underground septic tank.
  3. A natural separation process begins inside of the septic tank where solids sink to the bottom, scum rises to the top and liquid collects in the middle.
  4. Bacteria inside of the tank begin the natural process of decomposing the sewage.
  5. Partially treated liquid is allowed to run out of the tank through an outlet pipe. It may require the help of an electric pump.
  6. Liquid effluent then travels on to a series of perforated pipes buried under the ground.
  7. Dirt and gravel are often used as a natural filtering process for the wastewater.
  8. Bacteria living in the soil will eat away at the germs, disease causing bacteria and other harmful pathogens.
  9. The soil must be dry enough to absorb the septic tank effluent.
  10. Too much moisture can oversaturate the soil like a big sponge that can no longer absorb and treat sewage wastewater.
