Septic System Design Options

If you are in need of a new Septic System for your property due to new construction, home addition or replacement of a current system, contact a Licensed Septic Designer. A qualified septic design expert is needed to determine which type of septic design is needed for safe and effective sewage treatment. There are several different septic design options depending on the site location, proximity to the water table and soil conditions.

  • Gravity Distribution Septic System – this is the most common type of septic system used in Minnesota. It relies on natural elevation to move liquid effluent through the soil treatment system. Wastewater trickles through the soil where it is biochemically treated by naturally occurring bacteria.
  • Sand Filter Septic System – this type of system utilizes sand to pretreat the liquid wastewater before it flows into the soil treatment system. It is sometimes necessary when there is close proximity to lakes or in areas with shallow bedrock.
  • Pressure Distribution Septic System – this type of low-pressure system is often used in coarse, gravel conditions. A pump is used to disperse the liquid waste through a drainfield system.
  • Mound Septic System Design – this is an above ground system that resembles a raised dirt mound. The diagram above shows the components of a mound septic system. A pump sends the liquid effluent up into the raised mound where the sewage treatment process begins.
  • Aerobic Sewage Treatment System – aerobic treatment units are another alternative for sewage treatment when a traditional gravity system cannot be used. Compressed air is added to create an oxygenated environment where bacteria can grow and do its job of decomposing solid waste.
