Reasons For Sewage System Failure

There are several aspects that can cause or contribute to a Septic System Malfunction. With regular maintenance and avoiding common mistakes, a properly installed sewage treatment system will work safely and effectively for many years. The following are Reasons that Septic Systems Fail:

  • Flushing Objects Down the Toilet that do not belong. Many people seem to regard a toilet as a trash can and flush items that can clog the system and slow the biological treatment system. Try to flush only Human Waste and Septic Safe Toilet Paper.
  • Tree Roots or roots from shrubs that end up clogging pipes. Roots from perrennials and other landscaping can also grown into the septic system and cause problems with function of the drainfield. Always plant trees a safe distance from the sewage treatment area. Only native grass or shallow-rooted, low water plants should be planted on a Mound System.
  • Poor Maintenance practices including failure to have the Septic Tank Pumped out regularly. The tank should be inspected annually to check for problems and cleaned out when needed, usually about every three years. Using a Lint Filter on your washing machine helps with preventing a buildup of materials inside of the septic tank.
  • Overloading with Wastewater from your home by doing multiple wash loads or showers one after another. Another source of excess wastewater can be from a leaky toilet, sink or shower or from allowing a water softener to drain into the septic tank.
  • Garbage Disposals can overload a septic system with large amounts of organic materials that slow the biological breakdown within the system. Kitchen waste builds up inside of the tank, resulting in more frequent pumping.
  • Chemical Overload from using too many household cleaners or antibacterial soaps. Bleach and other household chemicals can disrupt the natural bacterial breakdown of wastwater. Using a moderate of chemicals for laundry and cleaning should not pose a major problem.
  • Driving or Parking on top of the septic system can compact the soil or cause damage to underground septic pipes. Soil is needed to complete the natural treatment process.
  • Frozen Septic System components due to inadequate insulation during long periods of very cold temperatures. Frozen septic pipes can also be attributed to leaky fixtures that allow small amounts of water to collect in the pipe leading to the septic tank. Make sure to run water frequently during excessively cold weather.
  • Poor Septic Design or Installation that results in a Non-Compliant Septic System. Hiring a Licensed Septic System Contractor such as Custom Septic, Inc. (CSI) will ensure that your sewage treatment system is in compliance with Minnesota state and local codes.
