Sherburne County set up Septic System Compliance Inspection Rules to protect Homebuyers and all residents. The following is a simplified version of Zoning Ordinances that relate to Septic Compliance Inspections:

  • Majority of Sherburne County MN property transfers will require a current septic compliance inspection from a Certified Septic Inspector.
  • Septic systems 5 years old or older should have an inspection prior to transfer of property.
  • Septic compliance inspections need to be completed within the past 3 years in order to be valid for property transfer.
  • Request for many building permits must have a valid septic compliance inspection completed within the last 10 years – or have an existing septic system that is less than 10 years old.

*Please Note: Be sure to check with Elk River or other local communities for additional septic system regulations. Many mortgage lenders will also require that the sewer system be inspected by a Certified Septic Inspector.
