Where Does Your Tap Water Come From?

Recycled Waste Water MNWhere does your tap water come from? If you lived in parts of California, Australia or Africa your answer may be Recycled Sewage. Numerous places in the US and across the globe are facing a very real water shortage. This water crisis has lead to Innovative Ideas on how to safely Transform Wastewater Into Drinking Water. With Minnesota being the Land of 10,000 Lakes and what seems like and endless supply of water sources, the idea hasn’t gotten much traction yet.

Current Septic Systems installed all around MN organically treat sewage before allowing it to return to the groundwater. Most properties with an Individual Septic System also have a private well. Licensed Septic Contractors like Custom Septic, Inc. (CSI) install effective Wastewater Treatment Systems on individual properties in the Twin Cities and Northern Minnesota. The city of Minneapolis, MN and several surrounding suburbs get their drinking water from the Mississippi River. Is it really so far fetched to Recycle and Reuse Wastewater for Human Consumption?

Transforming Wastewater Into Drinking Water

As California is facing a very big drought situation the Orange County Water District is very busy Transforming Waste Water Into Drinking Water. They recycle water that comes from doing laundry, dishes, showers, sinks and toilets. It is processed through an Innovative 3 Step Treatment System that removes Bacteria, Viruses, Pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. The treated waste water is mixed with the groundwater supply. Experts say if exceeds drinking water standards of both the state and federal standards.

  1. Microfiltration that removes solids, bacteria and oils
  2. Reverse Osmosis to filter out viruses and pharmaceuticals
  3. UV Light treatment for removing remaining organic materials

Re-Using Minnesota Wastewater

Minnesota Communities such as Mankato and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community have been using reclaimed and treated wastewater for washing city trucks, irrigating golf courses and flowerbeds. MN state regulations do not allow for recycled wastewater to be used for human consumption.
