Public Sewer Systems

If you live in a Minnesota city or town there is a very good chance that your property is connected to a Public Sewer System. A good indication that you are connected to the city sewers would be if you have city water and receive a Monthly Bill.

Private Onsite Septic Systems

Properties that are located outside of the city or beyond the local sewer system usually have an Onsite Septic System to handle sewage and waste water. A septic system can be configured on number of different ways but generally have an underground septic tank.

• Septic pipe carries human waste and waste water from the home to an underground holding tank.
• Bacteria inside of the septic tank will begin the biological treatment process.
• Liquid waste flows out of the septic tank and into the soil treatment area called a drainfield.
• Septic tanks need to be inspected regularly and pumped out approximately every 3 years, depending on usage.
• The MN homeowner is responsible for maintaining the septic system.
• Septic system repairs and inspections are handled by a licensed MN septic professional.
• Initial installation of an individual septic system can be expensive but there are generally Less Ongoing Costs than homeowners pay for the municipal sewer system.
