Septic System Basics

A Septic System is an underground treatment structure that uses nature and technology to safely treat household wastewater from bathrooms, kitchens and laundry. Your typical septic sewage system includes an underground septic tank, a drainfield or soil absorption field.

  1. Water from your home travels through a pipe into the septic tank.
  2. The septic tank is a water-tight container that is buried underground. This tank holds the wastewater and allows it to separate. Sludge sinks to the bottom of the tank and Scum floats on the top.
  3. Effluent is the name for the liquid wastewater that exits the tank into the drainfield or leach field.
  4. Wastewater is then percolated in the soil where harmful bacteria is removed naturally.
