Frozen Sewer Line Prevention Tips Anoka MNAvoid Frozen Sewer Line

Like it or not, an Arctic Blast is headed our way. So far Most of Minnesota has had a very mild winter with fairly warm temperatures. But, grab your scarf and get ready for Below Freezing Temps and the possibility of a Frozen Septic System. The lack of measurable snowfall makes the situation worse by failing to provide natural insulation against the cold air. Luckily its not too late to do something about it. CSI Custom Septic, Inc. has some simple Tips to Prevent Frozen Sewer Lines and Septic Tanks in the Ramsey, Champlin & Anoka MN areas.

Prevent Sewer System Freeze Up

A nice warm winter vacation on a tropical beach probably sounds good right about now but beware of coming home to a Frozen Septic System. Whether you plan to stay home or escape to someplace much warmer there are steps you can take now to Prevent Sewer System Freeze-Ups during a prolonged cold snap.

  • Schedule a septic system inspection to look for potential problems before the temperatures take a dive below zero.
  • Repair any leaks in plumbing fixtures, appliances or hot water heater to prevent a slow drip that could freeze in the sewer line.
  • Stay on top of septic system maintenance to keep it running smoothly all year long.
  • Arrange to have the septic tank pumped out if your inspector finds that this is a good time to remove contents of tank.
  • Make sure to run warm water through drains at leaste every 2 or 3 days. You could take a hot shower, wash dishes, wash laundry in warm or hot water, anything to avoid ice forming in pipes.
  • Keep a thick layer of snow on top of septic tank and drainfield to act as natural insulation from the cold.
  • If there isn’t adequate snow fall, you can use 8” to 12” of straw, hay or mulch to organically insulate the sewer pipes, septic tank and leach field.
  • Ask a septic contractor to insulate septic pipes or around the septic tank.
  • Avoid any activity that will compact the soil in the vicinity of septic system components.

What NOT To Do With A Frozen Sewer System

  • Never pump sewage out onto the ground
  • Never build a fire over septic system in attempt to thaw
  • Never put antifreeze or salt into septic tank
  • Never run water down frozen drain for prolonged amount of time
