How Septic Systems Work

Working with sewers is a dirty job but the work that Septic Services Providers do can save us all from living with the effects of contamination in our water, yards and community. A septic system is an Onsite Wastewater Treatment System that is widely used in rural areas around the country. There are several different types of septic systems operating in Minnesota. Most on-site systems have a Septic Tank and Drainfield or Soil Treatment Area.

Your Septic Systems Works through a combination of Nature and Technology that together can neutralize or remove contaminants from wastewater. Here is a very basic description of the workings of a typical septic system:

  1. Water from laundry, kitchens and bathrooms runs from a house, cabin or building through a pipe and into an underground septic tank.

  1. Wastewater collects inside of the tank where it separates into 3 areas. Light materials such as oil and grease float to the top as Scum. Solid materials sink to the bottom as Sludge. Liquids make up the middle area as Effluent. Waste water is pretreated inside of the septic tank through an organic process involving bacteria.

  1. Effluent exits the tank through an outlet valve.

  1. Pretreated effluent runs through pipes to the Drainfield or Soil Absorption Field. It is here that wastewater filters and percolates through the soil as harmful coliform bacteria is naturally removed through an organic process.

  1. When operating properly, your onsite wastewater treatment system can remove disease causing nutrients and pathogens before the naturally treated water ultimately seeps down and reaches groundwater.

Keeping MN Septic Systems Healthy Longer

Keeping Minnesota Septic Systems Healthy – Longer does not require much effort or expense for the typical property owner. Septic Smart Week uses catchy phrases like Protect Your Pipes and Think At The Sink to get the point across that what goes into the septic tank can cause problems.

  • Protect Your Plumbing Pipes by allowing only organic human waste (urine & feces) and toilet paper to be flushed down the toilet. Everything else is on the do not flush list. Common offenders include wet wipes, tampons, paper towels, cigarette butts, medications and plastic.

  • Think About Your Kitchen Sink and limit what is allowed to go down the drain. Rinse water, dishwater and biodegradable soaps are fine. Pay attention to the manufacturers recommendations for use and limit how much water is used each day. Limit use of garbage disposal, avoid harsh chemicals and dispose of cooking fats and grease in the trash.
